Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed ignored the decision of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Council and appointed Prof. Joseph Bosire as Acting Vice Chancellor (VC).
Joseph Bosire replaced Fredrick Otieno and will serve as the VC for the next 3 months. His first major official duty will be presiding over 13th MMUST graduation scheduled for Friday 14th December 2018.
There had been a confusion over the past one week as to who will preside over the 13th MMUST graduation. This followed the expiring of the contracts of top management officials of the University.
Prof. Bosire was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC)- Academic Affairs at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (Jooust) prior to his appointment. He is a professor of Business and Economics from KU(Kenyatta University). His past work places include Laikipia and Egerton Universities and Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The decision by the Education Cabinet Secretary(CS) left MMUST University Council in panic and confusion. The Council had already settled on Prof. Egara Kabagi as Acting VC. Prof Kabagi is currently the DVC(Planning,Research and Innovations) and his term in office expires come 23rd January 2019.
The Council, through it’s chairperson Jeremy Bundi, had written to Prof. Otieno directing him to hand over to Prof. Kabaji. This followed the expiring of contracts of Prof. Otieno and Prof. Ngaira who was the DVC Academic and Students Affairs on 30th November 2018.
Prof. Bosire had already met with Uasu(University Academic Staff Union), KUSU(Kenya Universities Staff Union) and Kudheiha(Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Education institutions,Hospitals and Allied Workers) officials and agreed to work together. The Unions had been seeking for Otieno’s removal over corruption allegations and office abuse.
The University Council had already advertised for the positions of VC and DVC(Academic and Students Affairs) and the application deadline is 21st December 2018.The appointment will follow thereafter.
