CUE- MMUST Not Among 16 Universities Offering “Useless” Programmes

The Commission For University Education (CUE) has rejected 133 programmes in its latest audit report.

CUE is mandated to approve all academic programmes being offered by all universities in Kenya.Those students who are still undertaking these “useless” programmes will be forced to discontinue studies. Those who had graduated will end up jobless as their academic papers might be rejected by employers.

CUE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Mwenda Ntarangwi however said,”This is still an ongoing process and we are in consultation with the affected universities. “The audit report also reveals that both public and private universities declared a capacity of 163,925 out of which only 134,075 was approved.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is not among the affected universities. Below are the universities offering the unapproved programmes:

1. Tom Mboya University College -25

2. Garissa University.  -10

3. Alupe University.  -10

4. Great Lakes University Kisumu -8

5. Kenya Highlands Evangelical University -7

6. University of Embu -6

7. Lukenya University -6

8. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University -6

9. Turkana University -5

10.Kenyatta University -4

11. Karatina University -4

12. Moi University -3

13. Africa International University -3

14. Mama Ngina University -3

15. Kenya Methodist University -2

16. Kabarak University -2 

The audit was carried last year in readiness for 2019 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) placement.According to the report, Mama Ngina is not yet an accredited University College in Kenya.CUE also advised KUCCPS not to place students in Lukenya University until it meets certain requirements.CUE also stated that some universities varied programme titles hence it has renamed a number of programmes.This happens as 2018 KCSE candidates are doing their KUCCPS online revision of Programmes as they await joining Campus come September.
